Impact Stories: David

Seven years ago, our son David began at the Woodview Mental Health & Autism L.I.F.E. program. In that time, we have seen countless highs, amazing accomplishments, and milestones that would make any parent of a special needs child proud.

In the fall of 2016, David was eager to attend L.I.F.E. once a week. He was truly excited to go back each Wednesday.

Over the course of the next 2 years, his enrolment increased; by the start of 2019, he was attending 5 days a week. Through activities such as life skills, reading and comprehension, problem solving, and trips into society for both learning and volunteer purposes, L.I.F.E. has taught our son responsibility, appreciation of nature, empathy, and the importance of friendship.

They have also incorporated the use of “Colour Zones” to help him realize when he is getting frustrated, so he can move into a happier, more peaceful place. Overall, they have taught him how to deal with change and be flexible.

Thanks to the staff’s insight, care, and belief in our son, he has reached several milestones, including tasks we all take for granted, such as dealing with the public (like ordering at restaurants and money handling). This ultimately led to his first job as the “Garbage and Recycling Manager” at the L.I.F.E. facility on York Blvd. We are forever indebted to the staff at L.I.F.E. for care, compassion, teachings, and love they provide.

In David’s own words, “I’ll go to this program for all these years,” meaning forever!!!
