Brief Services

What are brief service programs?

Brief services are just that: counselling services that last a brief amount of time. They include sessions that are temporary and time-limited. For example, a single session or three to five sessions within a six-week time frame.

Sometimes, brief services may be all the treatment that is needed. But brief service programs can also identify that further treatment is needed.

Brief service programs are available for children and teens 7 to 18 years old (up until their 18th birthday) and/or parent/caregiver.

Are one of the brief service
programs right for your child?

As a parent or caregiver, you know the child or youth in your care. You recognize that changes in behaviour or daily patterns might signal something requiring attention. Do any of the following apply?

If so, and you are concerned enough to seek help, the brief service programs can help.

  • Is the child or youth in your care engaging in some disturbing behaviours?
  • Are sleep patterns or eating patterns suddenly different?
  • Has the once outgoing and happy child become withdrawn and sad?
  • Is the child or youth suddenly giving away personal items they once treasured?
  • Has the child/youth recently lost interest in hobbies, foods or activities that once gave them pleasure?
What is the focus of the brief services programs?

There are a number of brief service programs. Each focus on providing early and effective counselling sessions which will reduce the need for more intensive counselling in the future.

Sessions focus on helping a child or youth understand the issue(s) they face. They then learn and use coping skills to improve their functioning in the day-to-day world.
