Community Sessions for Autistic Youth

What are Community Sessions?

In community sessions, autistic youth and teens alongside an ABA Therapist, learn a variety of skills needed in community settings. The goals can include navigating the grocery store, using community resources such as the library or recreation centres, ordering at restaurants, and taking public transit.

Community sessions help young people to build independence, explore new interests, and make connections with their community.

Are Community Sessions Right for Your Child?

  • Can wait appropriately 5 minutes
  • Can tolerate louder environments
  • Can follow 1-2 step instructions and requests
  • Can participate in activities safely
  • Can participate in some conversation (with device or vocal)
  • Community sessions do not accommodate toileting protocols.
  • Children/youth need to toilet independently to attend in underwear.  Participants may attend in a pull-up.
  • No significant behaviours or safety concerns (bolting, flight risk, aggressive, verbal or physical behaviour, or self-injurious behaviour)
What is the focus of C0mmunity Sessions?

The focus of Community Sessions is for autistic youth and teens to learn a variety of skills needed in community settings. The goals can include navigating the grocery store, using community resources such as the library or recreation centres, ordering at restaurants, and taking public transit. Community sessions help young people to build independence, explore new interests, and make connections with their community. 

Location

Community sessions take place in the community and may include the grocery store, recreational centre, restaurant, library, and/or taking public transit.

Schedule

2 hour session in the community morning, afternoon or evening.

Cost

$366 per session, minimum of 12 sessions
