What is Halton Counselling and Outreach?
Woodview Halton Counselling and Outreach (WHCO) helps kids and teens ages 7 to 17 who are dealing with anxiety, depression, self-harm, difficulty going to school, managing emotions, controlling impulses, and low self-esteem. No diagnosis is needed. The program is open to all residents of Halton Region.
What is the focus of the Halton Counselling and Outreach Program?
The focus of WHCO is to help:
- Young people learn how to recognize, understand, and manage their mental health to feel better.
- Young people practice skills to strengthen their relationships at home, school, and in the community, especially when impacted by their mental health symptoms.
- Caregivers learn and practice ways to manage behaviour.
How does the program work?
Outreach workers work with the young person and their caregiver(s) to set a treatment goal. Sessions for children include their caregiver(s), while youth receive one-on-one support.
Skills from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and strategies from programs such as Zones of Regulation, Super Flex, Social Thinking Curriculum, GoZen, and MindUp are utilized to help the young person enhance their self-reflection and awareness, thinking patterns, distress tolerance and coping, communication, problem-solving, confidence, and resilience.
