A Gift of Adventure That Created Connection
When the family of Dwight Walker made their memorial donation, they chose to honour his memory in a way that reflected his values – knowing how much he loved to travel and how much joy it brought to the adults with autism at Woodview Manor. Their thoughtful gift helped transform a simple cottage rental into four days of breakthrough moments and lasting memories.
In early August, ten adults with autism and three staff members headed to Bobcaygeon for a cottage getaway that many participants couldn’t have afforded on their own. With rising living costs and limited incomes, opportunities like this had become increasingly out of reach for the group.
The Walker family’s memorial fund covered cottage rental costs, making the trip accessible to everyone who wanted to participate. For many, it was their first overnight trip since the pandemic disrupted their beloved travel tradition.
Stepping outside comfort zones
The real magic happened when familiar routines gave way to spontaneous moments of joy. Adults who typically followed strict bedtime schedules found themselves staying up late for card games and conversation. Those who might hesitate to try new activities were swimming, playing lawn games, and simply letting loose.
“I love seeing the clients out of their comfort zone,” shared program staff member Amanda McEachern. “At home, they have dinner and are in bed at the same time every night, because that’s what they know. At the cottage, staff were able to persuade them to stay up later, playing card games, swimming, backyard lawn games – just have fun and let loose, like anyone else would at a cottage vacation!”

Gratitude for the Donors Who Made It Possible
The cottage provided more than just a change of scenery – it offered the adults a chance to build deeper friendships with their peers and experience the simple pleasure of a vacation with friends. These shared experiences of laughter, relaxation, and adventure created memories that extend far beyond the four days spent in Bobcaygeon.
Your Impact
The Walker family’s memorial gift didn’t just fund a cottage rental; it funded freedom, friendship, and opportunity to experience joy through travel – values Dwight clearly cherished and that his family wanted to share with others in his memory.
We’re grateful to the Walker family and all who contributed to Dwight’s memorial fund for making this experience possible.
