Burlington nonprofit worker’s $1,000 annual donation helps remove barriers to professional development
Wendy Caron’s surprise visit turned Woodview’s Staff Appreciation Day into something truly special when she walked through the doors to draw names for the first recipients of her Learning Fund.
Caron, who retired in 2024 after 26 years with the Burlington-based nonprofit, established the $1,000 annual fund to help staff overcome financial barriers to education and professional development.
“It felt like coming home,” Caron said of her surprise return on June 20. The joy on everyone’s faces showed just how much she’s missed by the team.
Born from personal experience
The fund stems from Caron’s own struggles as a student. “When I was in school, I couldn’t afford basic things like babysitters or parking, which made attending classes extremely challenging,” she explained.
Her solution was elegantly simple: create barrier-free funding that staff can use for anything supporting their learning journey — courses, training, childcare, eldercare, travel, books, or other educational needs.
The only requirements? A desire to learn and letting your manager know about your request.
Overwhelming response
Woodview received 27 applications for the first round, with two staff members receiving $500 each.
Jessica MaGarrey will use her award to pursue teachers college in Cardiff, Wales, during a 10-month leave. “I have always dreamed of living abroad and completing higher education,” MaGarrey said. “Throughout my three years at Woodview, I’ve had a passion to educate children, youth, parents and the community.”
Rebecca Patterson will take cooking classes to develop additional skills for facilitating group lessons with families.
“I’m so happy folks are interested in the fund — it fills my heart,” Caron said. “We are so blessed to be in professions that make us hungry to learn more and be better.”
The fund represents more than financial support — it demonstrates Woodview’s commitment to staff development and removing obstacles to growth.
