Respite

What is the Respite Program?

Raising a child or youth with mental health needs can be challenging, and it can be exhausting for families. Sometimes parents and caregivers just need a break.  That is exactly what the Respite Program is about. In fact, the word respite means relief.

This program provides a chance for the child and parents to have some space apart “to reflect and recharge”. This temporary relief can help support the well-being of the entire family.

Is the Respite Program right for your child?

This program may be helpful for you and your child (up to the age of 18), if your child has been identified as having mental health concerns and the family does not have other opportunities for formal respite services.

Respite can provide a chance for the child and parents to have some space apart “to reflect and recharge”. This temporary relief can help support the well-being of the entire family.

What is the focus of the Respite Program?

The Respite Program is tailored to the needs of the child or youth and their family.

In this program, the child or youth will be supported by staff to practice skills that they and their parents have identified as an area to work on.

The program provides activities and programming that promote skill development and help to build self-confidence and independence. Improving social skills and making friends are also part of the programs.

Respite is offered in a variety of ways including:
  • Weekly one-on-one sessions;
  • Social groups;
  • Summer / Winter / March Break programming;
  • P.A. Day programming;
  • Overnight opportunities may be explored; and
  • Respite groups and/or individual programming.

The respite program is offered in a variety of settings. These may include in-centre, community locations and drop-in program sites. In-home respite is also an option for families that identify this as a need.
