Saturday Social Skills Groups

Woodview’s Ontario Autism Program (OAP) offers 8-week social skills groups with themes that include learning how to make friends, conversation, and emotional regulation. Groups are based on Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) principles and evidence-based strategies, and include video modelling, role play, and homework.

Playtime: Pals

8 week program, 1.5 hours per week

Dates: January 12 – March 9, 2019

(NO GROUP on February 16th)

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Location: 69 Flatt Road, Burlington

Cost: $480

The Pals group will primarily focus on further developing functional play and communication skills. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as board games, outdoor play, group homework, and within natural environment teaching (NET). Children are matched to groups based on their skill level and goals. Maximum of 6 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist to 3 children.

Special Instructions:

  • Snack is required (nut free only please)
  • Winter clothing for outdoor play (snow pants, boots, mittens, hat, scarf)

Examples of Goals to Choose From:

  • Play skills: turn taking, functional interactive play, parallel play, initiating play
  • Communication skills: asking and answering WH questions, making comments, greetings

Prerequisite Skills: Child shows interest in being around other children and plays with toys functionally. Child is able to be in a small group setting alongside peers with no aggression or self-injurious behaviours.

Mandatory Parent Session: There is one mandatory parent session on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.with our Clinical Supervisor, Amanda Ross. Parents will have the opportunity to watch videos to observe progress and gains of their child in the group, for information sharing with Woodview Staff, and to discuss next steps for future social skills.

Playtime: Chatterboxes

8 week program, 2 hours per week

Dates: January 12 – March 9, 2019

Cost: $640

The Chatterboxes group will focus on cooperative play and social communication. Participants will learn conversation skills and how to further socially engage with peers. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as board games, outdoor play, group homework, and within natural environment teaching (NET). Children are matched to groups based on their skill level and goals. Maximum of 6 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist to 3 children

  • Play skills: sportsmanship, co-operative play, initiating play
  • Communication skills: reciprocal conversation, showing interest
