Autism Social Skills Groups

Woodview Halton Autism Services offers 10-week social skills groups with themes that include learning to engage in functional play with peers including turn taking, requesting, sharing, and engaging in group routines. Groups are based on Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) principles and evidence-based strategies, and include video modelling, role play, and homework.

School Skills – Summer Group

6 week program, 2 hours per week

Dates: July 18th -August 22nd , 2019 (Thursdays)

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Location: 69 Flatt Rd, Burlington, On
Cost: $480

The School Skills group will focus on developing or expanding upon early literacy and numeracy skills. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as worksheets, group activities and group homework. Maximum of 6 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist: 3 children

Goals of group are as follows:

  • Following classroom routines (sitting at a desk, raising hand to answer questions)
  • Spelling skills (letter recognition, spelling words in written form, spelling name)
  • Writing/printing skills (Handwriting without Tears Program)
  • Numeracy skills (number recognition, counting 1-20)

Please select 2 priority goals from the ones listed above that will be recorded on your Behaviour Plan.

Special Instructions:

  • Snack is required (please make sure it is nut free)

Prerequisite skills: Child has a functional communication system (PECS, Proloquo2go, vocals) and is at least 4 years of age.

Mandatory Parent Session: There is 1 parent sessions on Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. During this time where parents will have the opportunity to watch videos to observe progress throughout group.

Playtime Pals

10 week program, 1.5 hours per week

Dates: October 5th – December 14th, 2019 (Saturdays)

(NO GROUP on October 12th)

Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Location: 69 Flatt Road, Burlington

Cost: $600

The Playtime Pals group is a needs-based group that will primarily focus on further developing functional play and communication skills. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as board games, outdoor play, group homework, and within natural environment teaching (NET). Children are matched to groups based on their skill level and goals. Maximum of 6 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist to 3 children.

Special Instructions:

  • Snack is required (nut free only please)

Topics Include:

  • Functional play: including sharing and turn taking, initiating and reciprocating greetings, requesting items from peers, as well as engaging in group routines.
  • Please select two priority goals that will be reported in the Behaviour Plan.

Prerequisite Skills: Child has a functional communication system (i.e. PECS, P2G, vocals), and shows interest in being around other children.

Mandatory Parent Session: There is one mandatory parent session on Saturday, December 14th, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. with an OAP Clinical Supervisor. Parents will have the opportunity to watch videos to observe progress and gains of their child in the group, for information sharing with Woodview Staff, and to discuss next steps for future social skills.

Children’s Friendship Training

10 week program, 2 hours per week

Dates: October 3rd – December 5th, 2019 (Thursdays)

(NO GROUP on October 12th)

Time: 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Location: 69 Flatt Road, Burlington

Cost: $800

The Children’s Friendship Training (CFT) group will focus on cooperative play and social communication. Participants will learn conversation skills and how to further socially engage with peers. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as board games, outdoor play, group homework, and within natural environment teaching (NET). Children are matched to groups based on their skill level and goals. Maximum of 8 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist to 4 children.

Special Instructions:

  • Snack is required (nut free only please)

Topics Include:

  • Conversation skills, entering and exiting a group, sportsmanship, get togethers, dealing with teasing.
  • Please select two priority goals that will be reported in the Behaviour Plan.

Prerequisite Skills: Child uses full sentences, engages in social activities with peer with/without prompts, and can participate in a large group setting. No aggressive or self-injurious behaviours. 7-11 years of age.

Program Requirements: This 10 week program includes parent attendance during the 5:30-7:30 group time. Parent sessions will include a review of weekly goals and progress as well as goal setting for the next week of service and will be lead by a CFT trained staff.

Play and Learn – Burlington

10 week program, 1.5 hours per week

Dates: October 5 – December 14, 2019 (Saturdays)

(NO GROUP on October 12th)

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Location: 69 Flatt Road, Burlington

Cost: $600

The Play and Learn is a needs-based group that will primarily focus on developing functional play skills and group participation skills. These skills will be taught using an evidence-based model and through activities such as turn taking games, outdoor play, group homework, and within natural environment teaching (NET). Children are matched to groups based on their skill level and goals. Maximum of 4 children in a group.

Ratio: 1 therapist to 2 children.

  • Snack is required (nut free only please)

  • Social play: parallel play, exploring toys and activities, imitating others, sharing items with adults
  • Please select two priority goals that will be reported in the Behaviour Plan.

Prerequisite Skills: Child shows interest in being around other children and playing with toys. A communication system is not required.

Mandatory Parent Session: There is one mandatory parent session on Saturday, December 14th, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with a Clinical Supervisor. Parents will have the opportunity to watch videos to observe progress and gains of their child in the group, for information sharing with Woodview Staff, and to discuss next steps for future social skills.
