The Part Time Autism Developmental Service Worker is responsible for assisting in facilitating learning and development of a variety of skills through specialized educational programs for clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a variety of milieus.  He/she fosters cooperative social behaviour to assist the clients in forming satisfying relationships with others and may play a role in residential settings, individual or group formats to enhance the social skills, life skills, communication skills, self regulatory behaviour, school performance and independent functioning of clients.  These skills, using ABA principles, may be taught through 1:1 instruction, through structured and/or informal group learning opportunities, vocational, recreation and/or leisure activities.  These skills may be taught in a variety of settings, including vocational, independent and/or supported living/residential situations, groups and in the community. 

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Client Service and Support

  • Serves in a professional and caring manner that respects the needs, wishes and abilities of the clients, and respects the philosophies and values of the Centre, the community and the profession.
  • Actively engages clients, teaching a variety of age appropriate skills/activities to ensure ongoing learning to increase independence.
  • Provides training and client support related to a variety of daily living activities including personal shopping, taking public transit, personal hygiene, meal planning, budgeting, banking, doing cleaning chores and cooking.
  • May assist with case management.
  • May need to communicate with community agencies such as the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).
  • Monitors client behaviours, identifies concerns/learning needs and communicates this to the Case Manager/Program Manager.
  • Provides one to one counselling and assists with problem solving.
  • Acts as a role model to help clients problem solve and improve self-esteem and social skills.
  • Oversees the implementation of client’s personal schedules.
  • Documents and distributes client medication.
  • Transports individuals or groups of clients in agency vehicles or in their personal vehicles.
  • In collaboration with the Program Manager, plans and/or assists with a variety of programs, groups and special activities/community outings for clients. This may also include camps or trips of varying lengths.
  • Provides sex esteem and abuse training to clients.
  • Completes sleeping night shifts to provide support and ensure the safety of clients on a rotational basis.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Diploma or Degree from a recognized University or community college in the fields of Autism Spectrum Disorders, Behavioural Sciences, Psychology, Human Services or equivalent in education and experience and professional training deemed acceptable to serve the needs of the client population.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated  experience implementing strength-based and evidence-based practices and supports, particularly the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis, in an environment working with children/youth and/or adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder is an asset to the role.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with the policies and procedures of the Agency and Ministry directives with the assistance of the Program Manager.
  • An interest in self-development and professional growth. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills and capacity to relate positively to clients.
  •  Good judgement, initiative and demonstrated high standard of service delivery and professional skills.
  •  The ability to work independently and as a supportive and active member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated good health.  (A certificate indicating the absence of communicable disease is required at the time of employment).
  • An ‘F’ license is preferable, otherwise a valid (G) driver’s license, and the ability/capacity to drive agency vehicles is required unless and accommodation is made and approved by the Program Director.
  • Incumbent must be trained in AODA, First Aid/CPR, ASD-NVCI and WHMIS.
  • A vulnerable sector screen certifying that the applicant has not been convicted of any criminal offence which might be relevant to the position being requested.
Effort and Working Conditions:
  • Manual dexterity will be required to use a computer to input client data, safely administer medication, etc.
  • Possesses the physical strength and agility to perform all responsibilities including interacting with children/ youth and/or adults in active programs and the use of physical restraint if necessary.
  • Due to the nature of the client population, the incumbent must be able to tolerate volatile situations which can escalate into shouting, aggression and self-injurious behaviours; and stay calm to implement prescribed behavioral protocols (i.e. redirection, de-escalation, blocking, physical restraints, etc.).  
  • He/she may be exposed to infectious waste, diseases and conditions including exposure to the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses and is required to take the necessary precautions.  
  • Travel may be required, so individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Incumbent will interact with clients, family members, staff, community partners under all kinds of circumstances, some of which may be stressful and/or traumatic.
  • There will be occasional use of a personal vehicle required unless an accommodation is made and approved by the Program Director. 
  • Any driving infractions/incidents must be reported to the Program Manager within 24 hours.
  • This position is performed within a variety of milieus including within the community.
  • Works flexible hours and/or shifts as determined by the Centre and described in the employment contract, which may include weekday, weekend, evening hours and sleep shifts.
  • The incumbent must be responsive and exhibit sound judgement.
